Salon Exhibition “Nostalgia of Photography / Special Exhibition: Images of the Great Kanto Earthquake”

March 22 (Wed.) - March 28 (Tue.)

Ishida Kiichirō Summer Rooms, ca.1925, the Shoto Museum of Art

“Nostalgia” means reminiscing about past events and times. People often experience this sentimental longing when they see photographs that portray a certain moment of time and preserve it in tangible form. This Salon exhibition, composed of works from the museum’s collection, examines the nature of nostalgia in photography through the works and related materials of photographers such as Shinzō Fukuhara, Motoo Ōhtaguro, Isao Kakefuda and Kiichirō Ishida of the Shashin Geijutsu-sha (Photography Art Society), which was formed in 1921.
This salon exhibition will also include a section regarding the relationship of art to the Great Kanto Earthquake, which occurred one hundred years ago on September 1, 2023. The earthquake transformed the urban space of Tokyo and had a great earthquake of a century ago through paintings and photographs from the museum’s collection.
