Two-handled cup with lid and saucer with lapis lazuli base color decorated by gold gilding and bird motifs, 1759, Private collection
Sèvres porcelain, with its magnificent colors and painting-like brush strokes, depicting flowers and birds, personages, and landscapes fashionable at the time, epitomizes the image Japanese people have of Western porcelain. The foundation of Sèvres porcelain manufactory is deeply connected to Madame de Pompadour and Louis XV of France, and while it used to be a favorite of royalties and aristocrats, it is highly appraised until the present day.
This exhibition showcases pieces from domestic collections, dating mostly from the rule of Louis XV of France until the Napoleonic era, and introduces Sèvres porcelain dearly beloved by queens, empresses, and royal mistresses such as Madame de Pompadour, Marie-Antoinette, Joséphine Bonaparte, and Marie-Louise.
