FUNAKOSHI Naoki (1953 – 2017) was born in Tokyo. His father, FUNAKOSHI Yasutake (1912 – 2002), and his elder brother, Katsura (1951 – 2024), were both figurative sculpture artists, and Naoki continued their creative path. He started by creating two-dimensional pieces, but in the 80s, he also got into abstract sculptures. Freely switching between sculptures and paintings, Naoki developed into an artist not limited by any form. He continued creating amorphous figures, original drawings filled with strong human presence, and three-dimensional works, and while leading a solitary existence and insisting on his independence from any affiliations, he developed a passionate fan base. The present exhibition is a precious first opportunity to introduce an overview of his work, especially as 10 years since his passing are approaching.
