Memories and Records of Places: The Journey through the Scenes

Tuesday, February 27, 2024-Saturday, March 16, 2024

Minami Kunzo, England, 1908, Watercolor on paper
The Shoto Museum of Art

A variety of scenes can be described as “landscapes,” including natural landscapes, urban landscapes, and everyday landscapes. It may be a destination you are traveling to, an alley you came across on a stroll, a room you spend time in every day, a mental picture in your mind, an ideal place – or it may be a landscape you see for the first time, a place that looks familiar to you, or a famous spot you know well. The landscape captured within a frame invites us, the viewers, to leap through time and space into the place and moment that it depicts.

This exhibition introduces oil paintings, watercolors, Nihonga (Japanese-style paintings), prints, and photographic works of landscapes from the museum’s collection. Why did the artists choose to paint or capture these landscapes? Come explore various landscapes and contemplate the scenery and the artists’ perspective.
